Got Grapes? Make Chutney!
Derived from the East Indian word chatni - chutney is a spicy and aromatic condiment that usually contains sugar, fruit, vinegar, and mucho spices. Enter this delicious rendition using grapes and chinese 5 spice - which by the way, you need to add to your spice selection if you haven’t already!
Spiced Grape Chutney
-about 2 cups grapes - preferably red
-1 tablespoon oil
-2 teaspoons chinese 5 spice
-1 tablespoon ginger
-1/3 cup light brown sugar
-1 teaspoon kosher salt
-2 tablespoons water
-1 teaspoon chili flakes
Heat oil in pan over medium heat, add in 5 spice and ginger.
Mix until oil is incorporated. Add grapes, sugar, salt, and water - cook, stirring occasionally for 20 minutes over medium-low heat.
Add in chili flakes and stir.
Mash mixture, cool, dish and cover.
Keeps for 1 week. Enjoy with proteins like pork or chicken, or paired with cheese and crackers - yum! If you’re after a slightly less spicy version - omit the chili flakes, you’ll get plenty of zing from the ginger!
